Seeking information under RTI Act, 2005.
The following information pertains to data retention and practices being followed by Telecom Service Providers (BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Vodafone etc) on the information collected from their subscribers.
1. Does Telecom Service Providers store the following information/data.
a. Text message details (To and From cell numbers, timestamps etc)
b. Text message contents (The text and/ or data content of the SMS or MMS)
c. Call Detail Records (Inbound and Outbound Phone numbers, call duration)
d. Bill copies for postpaid and recharge/topup billing details for prepaid.
e. Location Data (based on cell tower, GPS, wifi hotspots or any combination thereof).
2. If it does store data then.
a. For what period does Telecom Service Providers store SMS and MMS Messages, cellular and mobile data, customer data, CDR, Bill copies, location data etc.
b. What procedures for retention does Telecom Service Providers have for SMS and MMS Messages, cellular and mobile data, customer data, CDR, Bill copies, location data etc.
c. What security procedures and practices followed by Telecom Service Providers for SMS and MMS Messages, cellular and mobile data, customer data, CDR, Bill copies, location data etc.
3. How long does Telecom Service Providers Store.
a. IP Session information (Connection start and end time, bytes in and out)
b. Media Access Control (MAC) Address of the modem/router/device etc.
c. IP Destination information (Browsing logs/history/access records)
d. Browsing data (Inbound and Outbound data content websites visited, email sent and received)
e. Bill Copies for post paid and recharge/top up billing details for prepaid.
